On March 13th, REBUS members had a chance to tour the studio of 90 Degrees West. A welcoming, modern brick building located on the corner of Park and Truman Parkway, the 90°W studio is right on the edge of Lafayette Square, and has recently done business with Bud Light, Scottrade, Sea World, and McDonald’s.
After arriving, attendees had a chance to rub elbows with 90 Degrees West Partner Ellen Legow and several employees while noshing on a few delicious appetizers and beer from local craft producer Square One Brewery, before rotating in groups through the various editing suites involved in the motiongraphics process.
Graphics and animation, sound design, and color grading breakout sessions gave REBUS members a chance to experience the range of services that 90 Degrees West offers their clients. Highlighted throughout the tour were a range of TV spots that the 90°W team produced with Cannonball Agency for Ameristar Casinos.
Afterwards, REBUS members got a free T-shirt from 90°W, and many went to enjoy a few of Lafayette Square’s local establishments. If you missed the March event, but would like to take a tour of 90°W, be sure to contact Ellen Legow at ellen@90degreeswest.com.
Look for updates on future REBUS events coming soon!

On January 31st, REBUS members had an opportunity to experience the creative arm of one of the world’s largest PR agencies. Fleishman-Hillard showed off their newly renovated space to over 65 guests at the first REBUS meetup of 2012, and took the opportunity to give some insight into their work in the field of Digital Motion. FH was well prepared for the event, and guests enjoyed great hors d’oeuvres from Broadway Oyster Bar and refreshments from Schlafly Beer.
After an initial introduction and mingling session, where attendees got a general overview of digital motion, Fleishman-Hillard provided breakout sessions that displayed in more depth the work they’ve recently completed with individual clients, like Energizer, Gatorade, Aflac, Papa John’s, Rawlings, and AT&T. REBUS pulled a double switch last Tuesday night at Busch Stadium when they hosted the REBUS Quadruple Play Client Panel, an event that allowed young advertising professionals a chance to turn the tables by putting some of St. Louis’ biggest brands on the hotseat. While somewhat of a misnomer, as REBUS chaired five panelists instead of the anticipated four, the Quadruple Play offered participants a rare chance to ask the panelists about their days and ways running big brands. A big thanks to the folks at Group 360 and the volunteers from Ready + Willing. The September event proved, once again, to be a great success. 50+ advertising folk gathered for drinks and discussion in Group 360′s huge three story space. While the goal was originally to document the nights festivities, the 360-degree bar complete with almost any beer you can imagine (AB products of-course) completely got the best of me. But hey, you can’t spell REBUS without BEER right? Right.
Check back to the blog soon for details on next month’s event!
Last week Rodgers Townsend (Thanks to Jen Oertli!) was kind enough to once again let us use their big conference room and facilities as REBUS plans for 2011 and ’12. We were excited to have at least 30 attendees, many of whom were new faces . . . all of whom were enthusiastic about doing what they can to help REBUS grow and deliver even more value in the future.
We went into the meeting looking for volunteers for various positions, and got them. This does not mean we’re “covered”! There is still room for more help in every category including writers (social media communicators) to help with the blog and the other REBUS online presence. There is room for writers of every level to contribute to the blog and Twitter. We’re always looking for additional designers, especially those with html and online skills. We’re creating a “video team” to cover our events, and any other videos we (they) decide to produce. We also need Special Event Managers. If you’re interested in any of these opportunities, please contact Danny (Danny.Elchert@yahoo.com) or Rachel (Rachel.Barbieri@gmail.com), they’ll hook you up. (more…)

If there’s one thing everyone in advertising (or those aspiring to be in advertising) knows, it’s that the industry as a whole is not an easy one to get into. In fact, according to Jennifer Oertli, VP, Director of Human Resources at Rodgers Townsend, a spelling mistake, a less than positive attitude, or an unclear application is all it takes to go from “right” pile to the wrong. But really, that’s just common sense right? Well, that’s what REBUS wanted to find out.
On Tuesday, June 14, over seventy advertising hopefuls, five agency heads, and a number of other advertising professionals packed into the awesome space of FK Studios for the second annual Portfolio Polish event: Shinola. The evening kicked off with drinks and discussions with agency President Mark Schupp of Schupp Company taking the stage to set things off. An interactive presentation allowing the audience to “text-in” to choose the topic, Schupp talked the most notable question of the night: How to get hired.
Next up was David Johnson President of production company Coolfire Media. While the discussion started out daunting with a reminder that “we’re no longer up against college kids for entry level jobs” it ended with a hint of optimism focusing on the idea of attitude over aptitude, with the former almost always winning out. Melinda Love Senior Vice President & Senior Partner at Fleishman-Hilliard kept the optimism alive with a focus on attitude, communication, and of course, designs as the keys to success to get hired in the creative community. Jennifer Simler, account director at Switch and Jeff Stevens, Executive Creative Director of Momentum rounded out the speaker series with advice for both account and creative professionals on how to start and succeed in the industry.
The night ended with one-on-one portfolio reviews from a group of 21 agency executives. With representation from over 13 local agencies, almost all of the attendees got a range of constructive criticism in each of the respective disciplines. I think I even overheard one attendee say he got a freelance writing gig from one of the larger agencies in town.
While REBUS is the young professional arm of the St. Louis Advertising Club, that doesn’t mean its events are only for the fresh faces. With events happening almost every month, at a different agency venue every time, I can’t think of a better time to encourage you to get involved. Thanks to all of the speakers, vendors, and audience members for making this a remarkable event. Check back to the blog soon for more details on the next REBUS event!

They grow up so fast! In case you missed it, REBUS celebrated its 5th birthday on Thursday, March 10th at Switch. And what a party it was—pizza, beer, good music, good people, a live twitter feed projected onto the wall, and a replica of the iconic yellow schoolbus made entirely out of CAKE.
The recently expanded space that Switch calls home was more than accommodating for the 100+ guests in attendance. Several agency tours were given in small groups while people mixed and mingled, traded business cards, told stories, and enjoyed themselves.
Once the tours were finished, everyone gathered on the giant steps and along the ramps for the presentation of the night. Danny Elchert and Rachel Barbieri, REBUS co-chairs, kicked things off by presenting an award to REBUS founder Robert Bishop. Bob told the story of how REBUS was born- He was looking at a copywriter’s work, and the artwork was so bad that he could barely get the message of the words. It was then that he had the idea to bring copywriters and designers together to help each other out. Hence, REBUS, which literally means “a representation of words in the form of pictures or symbols.” Pictures (designers) and words (copywriters) working together.
