Finding an internship—the looming thought on every aspiring, young professional’s mind. I have been lucky enough to have a few wonderful internships, and I’m currently an intern at Schupp Company. However, I was also lucky enough to benefit from the wisdom and advice of agency professionals who are much more experienced than I am. Here are some helpful tips I was given, as well as some lessons I learned along the way.

1. Perfect Your Resume and Cover Letter

Most internship coordinators or human resources folk see hundreds to thousands of resumes and cover letters. Although they will probably only glance over yours for a minute, glaring errors are evident. Once you get your resume and cover letter in great shape, have some people look over it. I usually ask professors, industry professionals, mentors, former bosses, friends and even my mom. However, it is important to use your own judgment and not take every bit of advice you get. For example, there are some people who will tell you that it is important to have an “objective” at the top of your resume, and there are others who will scold you for it. It’s just a matter of personal opinion. If you really like something on your resume and one person tells you to change it, keep it or get another opinion. If five people tell you to change it, maybe it’s time to reconsider. Continue reading

REBUS Is Growing and Getting Even Better by headhunterbob

Last week Rodgers Townsend (Thanks to Jen Oertli!) was kind enough to once again let us use their big conference room and facilities as REBUS plans for 2011 and ’12.  We were excited to have at least 30 attendees, many of whom were new faces . . . all of whom were enthusiastic about doing what they can to help REBUS grow and deliver even more value in the future.

We went into the meeting looking for volunteers for various positions, and got them.  This does not mean we’re “covered”!  There is still room for more help in every category including writers (social media communicators) to help with the blog and the other REBUS online presence.    There is room for writers of every level to contribute to the blog and Twitter.     We’re always looking for additional designers, especially those with html and online skills.  We’re creating a “video team” to cover our events, and any other videos we (they) decide to produce.  We also need Special Event Managers.  If you’re interested in any of these opportunities, please contact Danny (Danny.Elchert@yahoo.com) or Rachel (Rachel.Barbieri@gmail.com), they’ll hook you up. Last week the REBUS team met at Rodgers Townsend to talk strategy for the upcoming year. Over 30 individuals showed up to support the future of the organization by offering up feedback on past events, pitching ideas for the future, and volunteering to help in all the different disciplines of the organization.

That said, we know a lot of individuals who weren’t able to attend that might be interested in lending a helping hand.  Below are all of the open positions within REBUS that we would be extremely glad to fill.  How do you sign up?  Just leave your name, the position you want to volunteer for, and an email address to get in touch with you at in the comments below.  We’ll take it from there!
